Redefining natural hair and inspiring authenticity
Anita Grant, a mother of two and Hello Hair's visionary founder, has built a brand and a lively, supportive community. From her first entrepreneurial venture, Fleeky Beauty, in 2017 to the profound mission of Hello Hair, Anitaâs path is one of resilience, self-discovery, and a deep-seated commitment to representation and education.

From Fleeky Beauty to Hello Hair: a journey of reinvention
Anitaâs entrepreneurial path began with Fleeky Beauty, a beauty-tech platform designed to connect beauty professionals with clients and equip them with essential tools. During the challenging period of its closure, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Anita forced herself to look inward and think about how she wanted to show up in the world.
âI had to figure out who I was without my business,â Anita reflects. âMy hair became a catalyst for my self-discovery. I wanted to live in my authenticity, and my hair allowed me to do that.â
Expecting her first child, Tiana, Anitaâs reflections deepened. The connection between her self-esteem, natural hair, and role as a mother inspired her to create a childrenâs book titled Hello Hair: 100 Different Hairstyles! Featuring over 100 natural hairstylesâafros, braids, twists, and locsâthe book aims to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Black hair and foster self-love in children like Tiana.
Building Hello Hair: a mission of representation and celebration

In 2021, Anita pitched her book during an online competition and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. This moment sparked the evolution of Hello Hair into a broader brand. Today, Hello Hair offers books, dolls, and educational programs to represent, educate, and celebrate the beauty of natural hair.
âWeâre on a mission to change the narrative around natural hair,â Anita shares. âThrough our products and programming, we aim to create an environment where everyone feels seen and celebrated.â
Dolls that educate and inspire

Hello Hair dolls are more than toys; they blend play and education. The dolls are designed with diverse hair textures and skin tones and cater to various age groups. âFor toddlers, itâs about play and exploration. For tweens, itâs about learning hair care and styling,â Anita explains.
The dolls also support parents, hairstylists, and educators in fostering conversations about hair care and representation. âHair education shouldnât just be for stylists,â Anita says. âOur dolls make it accessible for everyone.â
Moments of triumph and growth

For Anita, the most rewarding moments since launching Hello Hair stem from having the courage to start again. After the closure of Fleeky Beauty, Anita embraced a growth mindset, turning past challenges into stepping stones for Hello Hair.
Her determination paid off when Taraji P. Henson, an icon of authenticity and representation, reached out. âGrowing up, Taraji helped me love myself. Having her acknowledge Hello Hair felt like a full-circle moment,â Anita says. This connection began after a viral video introducing Hello Hair dolls garnered over a million views despite initial backlash.
âThe comments about the dollsâ eyes being âtoo openâ or âcreepyâ could have discouraged me,â Anita recalls. âInstead, I engaged with every comment, thanked the viewers, and learned from the experience.â
A highlight of Anitaâs journey was her appearance on Dragons' Den. Encouraged by her mentor, Stephanie Williams, Anita entered the den and secured a deal with Arlene Dickinson and Wes Hall. âIt was surreal to achieve something I once thought was out of reach,â she says.
The political impact of Black hair

For Anita, hair is deeply political. âIn Canada, microaggressions around Black hair are common, and we donât talk about them enough,â she states. Hello Hair aims to spark these conversations with initiatives like the upcoming podcast Rise in Your Roots, where diverse individuals share their hair journeys.
âHair is an entryway to understanding identity,â Anita says. âWhen we talk about hair, we dive into the deepness of an individual and how hair has been a part of that.â
Whatâs next for Hello Hair
Looking ahead, Anita envisions Hello Hairâs educational programs expanding nationwide and connecting with communities. Upcoming projects include:
- The Rise in Your Roots podcast
- Â A symposium in Hamilton focusing on hair health and harmony
- Collaborations with organizations for hair workshops
Anita Grantâs journey exemplifies resilience, authenticity, and the power of representation. Sheâs redefining beauty standards through Hello Hair and inspiring others to embrace their true selves.
